London has over 750 cinemas, but which offer the most unique film-going experiences? Celebrate London Book and Screen Week this month with our guide to three hidden auditoriums that you’ll never forget…  

 

ELECTRIC CINEMA, SHOREDITCH – Tucked away on the easy-to-miss Redchurch Street, it’s marked only by a small lettered sign spelling ‘CINEMA’. Whilst its street art-laden brickwork lacks the nearby Rich Mix arts centre’s glamour, the venue has a minimalist charm. This month you can see La La Land and Lion but in a cosy, distinct  underground  auditorium which only seats 50 people.

PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA, SOHO – Moments away from Leicester Square, this small cinema has its own red-carpeted entrance, and its walls are adorned with posters of both classic and modern blockbusters, from Grease to Harry Potter. This eclectic taste in film is reflected by the showings offered inside, with March’s ranging from Rebel Without a Cause to Pitch Perfect, and a Dirty Dancing sing-a-long event.

OLYMPIC STUDIOS, BARNES – This cinema was renovated in 2013, but the venue has a long history. Originally a community arts centre in 1906, Olympic later hosted rock legends, like Queen, in the sixties when it was a recording studio. Inside there are nods to the past with paintings of speakers by Ronnie Wood, but the two auditoriums feel modern with reclining chairs, sofas and tables for snacks.
